Mumble and Murmur

TeamSpeak and Murmur are two free solutions to host audio server services on an organisation’s own servers. Murmur is a server side application which manages authentication and VOIP routing, for which the audio client has been named Mumble. TeamSpeak have been less quirky and have named their software TeamSpeak Server and TeamSpeak Client.

Both of these systems are designed more for audio conferencing with multiple parties, rather than individual to individual. When a user logs on, they arrive into an audio environment where a conference may already be in progress, like walking into a conference room with people already seated and chatting. An administrator can configure additional chat rooms and set privileges for authenticated users to join the room. Privileges can be restricted to listen only, but instant messaging rights may still be enabled for the user to voice an opinion, so to say, via text rather than audio.
