Blogs and web based discussion forums are quite similar tools, but are basically different in one main fundamental way, threading. With discussion forums a new thread can be created from within the discussion, where this particular comment becomes the basis for a new focus of discussion. A side debate, initiated as a thread, may generate more interest than the initial topic. Content developed around a comment is grouped together under the thread. A thread can also emerge from within a thread and ideally this nesting creates logical navigation matching discussions that develop. This can make a discussion forum easier to read and understand than blogs where comments can be fragmented on the page rather than being logically grouped. |
